Prenatal education to be the protagonist of your childbirth

There are two types of courses and approaches to prenatal education:

On the one hand there is the approach of most of the courses given by EPS or hospital institutions that only prepare you to obey, be submissive, not to question and accept everything that a health system offers you.

They tell you what to do, infantilize you if you ask too many questions and show you the stages of childbirth as a process that is supposed to be quite similar in all pregnant women. They omit the potential risks of the use of synthetic oxytocin, breaking the bag of water or continuous monitoring. Not to mention the Kristeller maneuver and the restriction of movement and feeding.

Similarly, information is shared by those who promote cesarean sections. This education is notoriously lacking in respecting the rights of women to express their wishes and preferences for childbirth.

On the other hand, prenatal education provides evidence-based information and seeks to integrate the woman and her companion in the decisions, respecting their wishes and preferences. This education makes space for listening to their fears and concerns. It also respects both the woman who wants to avoid using analgesia and the woman who wants it. This kind of education is not gonna laugh or label as «hippie» or «crazy» the woman who seeks to have a physiological birth and a more horizontal relationship with her health team (without so much hierarchy).

At UMAY we believe that an informed woman is able to make decisions where she and her family are the protagonists. Evidence-based prenatal education increases the confidence of the woman and her companion, promoting a positive experience. It allows her to connect with her body, emotions and the deepness of childbirth . This orientation in prenatal education recognizes the benefits of natural oxytocin, endorphins, companionship, upright birthing position, spontaneous pushing, movement, immediate skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and the tremendous potential of LOVE that floods and embraces every birth.
